Khiara Arby - global Studio 2A performance at 5:30pm Tuesday



Tune in for a special global music performance today with Malian diva Khaira Arby at 5:30pm on The Home Stretch.  Khaira Arby and her band bring Saharan desert blues to the Club Congress stage Tuesday, May 22nd in an early, KXCI Presents! show. Khaira and her ensemble combine rhythms of Mali, ethnic female vocals and dancing electric guitars of Timbuktu for a night of authentic African music. Think Tinariwen meets Ali Farka Toure, who is Khaira's cousin that she trained with. They played last year at Club Congress and it was truly one of the most memorizing and memorable shows of the year!

Coming Wednesday, another Studio 2A with  Plants and Animals. These Canadian indie-rockers are playing another KXCI Presents! show at Club Congress.

Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars - Studio 2A performance at 5:30pm Monday

Tune in for as special live performance today with Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars at 5:30pm on The Home Stretch.
KXCI Presents! - Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars this Monday night, May 21st at Solar Culture Gallery. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars have risen like a phoenix out of the ashes of war and inflamed the passions of fans across the globe with their uplifting reggae and African songs of hope, faith and joy. This all ages show starts at 7pm with Black Nature Band. Many will remember the amazing show they put on with KXCI and The Loft at The Rialto Theatre a few years back.

Coming Tuesday, another global Studio 2A with Malian diva Khaira Arby. She and her band bring Saharan desert blues to the Club Congress stage Tuesday, May 22nd in an early, KXCI Presents! show.

Triple Double Band - Locals Only - May 21st

Tonight on Locals Only we have the Triple Double Band live in Studio 2a at 9pm.
Hailing from Tucson, AZ, Triple Double Band pieces together an eclectic mix of influences to create a colorful and rich sound with a positive message; using three part vocal harmonies, complex rhythms, funky basslines, catchy sax melodies and an intricate yet driving piano, the band creates their own version of upbeat and feel-good rock. Triple Double Band celebrates their new CD, >IV, with a release party Friday May 25th at Club Congress, 7pm. KXCI Locals Only CD Release Party Saturday May 26th at Plush from 8am to 1pm

Kick off your Memorial Day weekend with a memorable KXCI CD Release Party at Plush on Saturday May 26th from 8pm to 1am. Just $5 gets you in the door. We released 91.3FM KXCI Presents: Locals Only Volume Six – Live From Studio 2A exclusively as a KXCI membership premium but it will be available to everyone for just $10 at the CD release party.

Confirmed guests include: Ashbury (as an acoustic duo), Key Ingredients of African Soul, The Modeens and The Tryst. These are just 4 of the amazing local artists you'll find on Locals Only Volume Six – Live From Studio 2A features. Brian Lopez (feat. Salvador Duran), The Division Fix, Young Mothers, Dead Western Plains, Gabriel Sullivan & Taraf de Tucson, Logan Greene & The Bricks, Ferrodyne, Amy Rude and Heartbeast, Jazz Telephone, Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl, Seashell Radio, and HAIRSPRAYFIREANDGIRLS also contributed a cut to the 16 track release culled and curated by Dr. Dan.

Dr. Dan was the host from 2008 to 2011, taking over from Don Jennings who did the program for ten years. Locals Only is still going strong with host Matt Milner each Monday from 8-10pm with a live performance in Studio 2A at 9pm on Community Radio KXCI. "My first experience with Tucson music was at a benefit for KXCI in January, 2004. Right away, I was hooked. Tucson had something special going on with original, passionate songwriting performed at historic venues like The Temple of Music and Art, The Rialto Theatre, and various clubs and galleries. Over the years I was privileged to become a part of the creativity and host Locals Only. I am happy to share some of the best performances from 2009 through 2011, recorded live in KXCI's Studio 2A" -Dr. Dan.

 KXCI Community Radio stations provides a rare platform for local and emerging artists whose work does not fall within the narrow parameters of other broadcast outlets. By introducing these artists to local audiences, KXCI has helped launch and sustain the careers of numerous contemporary musicians. Locals Only features a one hour interview/performance with local musicians 50 times a year. The Home Stretch features more than 100 live interview/performances annually of local and touring musicians. All of these performances are recorded and archived. The best go on our KXCI compilations which are used to help support the station.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars this Monday night, May 21st at Solar Culture Gallery. Malian diva Khaira Arby brings Saharan desert blues to the Club Congress stage Tuesday, May 22nd in an early, KXCI Presents! show. Khaira and her ensemble combine the rhythms of Mali, ethnic female vocals and the dancing electric guitars of Timbuktu, for a night of authentic African music. Born just outside Timbuktu, Khaira Arby prepares to tour North America carrying her message of peace in the wake of a coup d'etat that has besieged her country. While politics threaten to split her country, Arby's music champions peace and decries the hardships women face from political violence. With electric guitars and irresistible percussion, Khaira's indie-rock/desert blues songs echo centuries-old musical traditions.

KXCI Presents! Spiritualized with Nikki Lane and Great Lake Swimmers with Cold Specks

Spiritualized performs at The Rialto Theatre this Friday, May 18th in a KXCI Presents! show. British space rockers Spiritualized come to Tucson on a rare North American tour. Drawing on influences like the Velvet Underground and Brian Wilson, Spiritualized combines hypnotic minimalism with lush, panoramic symphonies. Doors open at 7pm with indie alt-country chanteuse Nikki Lane.
Tune in for a live performance at 5:30pm from Nikki Lane, Friday on The Home Stretch.
 
Great Lake Swimmers play Club Congress Sunday night, May 20th in an early and all-ages KXCI Presents! show. Canada’s Great Lake Swimmers create thoughtful indie-folk rock. New Wild Everywhere is the follow-up to Great Lake Swimmers’ critically acclaimed, Polaris Music Prize shortlisted and Juno nominated 2009 album Lost Channels. Doors open at 7pm with the arresting old-soul voice of Cold Specks. Cold Specks is 23-year-old Al Spx from Etobicoke, Canada, who now lives in London. Describing her sound as ‘Doom Soul’, Cold Specks’ music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South.

Chamberlab - Locals Only - May 14th

Tonight on Locals Only we have Chamberlab live in Studio 2a at 9pm.  
ChamberLab is a quarterly concert series devoted to bringing art music from unlikely sources into unexpected places. It’s garage classical. It’s DIY Chamber Music! Composers include Chris Black, Dante Rosano, Marco Rosano and Benjamin Degain; writing for bassoon, violin, piano, contrabassoon, contrabass, Wurlitzer, bari sax, vibraphone … and more. Chamberlab performs Saturday May 19th at Club Congress, 8pm.
