Ex-Cowboy on Locals Only Monday Feb. 25th


Monday night local group Ex-Cowboy bring their indie-folk live to the desert airwaves via KXCI's Studio 2A on Locals Only from 9 to 10pm. Listen live at 91.3FM or stream at kxci.org. Ex-Cowboy has a self titled CD on Diet Pop Records and their release party is Wednesday Feb. 27th at La Cocina with Logan Greene Electric and Talk2Strangers at 10pm. 

Created by Michael Huerta here in Tucson, Ex-Cowboy is the summation of diverse influences ranging from scary stories to Appalachian folk music. Ex-Cowboy somehow blends a balance of dark overtones and alluring sensitivities all within a western setting. The band has a rotating cast of people with instrumentation including accordion, violin, cello, double bass, guitar, drums and even bass clarinet.

KXCI Presents! Leftover Salmon Sunday Feb. 24th at The Rialto Theatre



Leftover Salmon plays this Sunday at The Rialto Theatre, KXCI Presents!
Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, Americana, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder, CO in 1989 the group was one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and tour rock & roll bars, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jam grass genre.

The creative voice of Night Beds, Winston Yellen, hails from Nashville by way of Colorado Springs. The 23 year-old songwriter boasts a new, great American voice with a specific brand of intimate thirst that few musicians possess. Touring in support of their full length record Country Sleep on Dead Oceans, Night Beds take on indie rock leans to atmospheric alt-country and they are playing Monday at Club Congress with Mellow Bellow and Best Dog Award opening at 7pm for 18+.

Agustus Woodrow-Tomizuka in Studio 2A and perfroming at Centennial Hall for a taping of From The Top


Tucson youth Augustus Woodrow-Tomizuka stopped by KXCI's Studio 2A for a live performance Feb. 14th on The Home Stretch. Click above to hear his performance of "Prelude One" by composer "Heitor Villa-Lobos" (1887-1959). Augustus and Cameron Williams were selected to perform as a part of the popular NPR show From the Top.
UApresents is hosting a taping of from The Top at Centennial Hall this Sunday, Feb. 17th at 4pm. The show will feature performances and captivating personal stories of extraordinary young classical musicians from across the country, and we just learned that two local musicians have been selected:

AUGUSTUS WOODROW-TOMIZUKA (guitar), 17, is from Tucson, Arizona where he studies with Thomas Patterson. He placed second in the Senior Youth Division of the 2012 Indiana International Guitar Competition. He has performed with indie band Picasso’s Wall, as well as with various Mariachi groups, around the Tucson area. A student at Sonoran Science Academy, he is passionate about conservation work and volunteers at the Reid Park Zoo; in 2010, he traveled to Churchill, Manitoba to study polar bears on scholarship.

CAMERON WILLIAMS (piano), 13, is from Tucson, Arizona where he is a student at Basis Tucson. He studies piano with Tannis Gibson at the University of Arizona. He has attended the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival for three years and the International Institute of Young Musicians at the University of Kansas for two years. Cameron enjoys drama and foreign languages, having studied German, Mandarin, and Russian.

Local singer-songwriter Andrew Collberg has long been a favorite on the local scene for his unassuming style that recalls the likes of John Lennon and others. Andrew also gets behind the drum set with Golden Boots and they will be playing together this Sunday for a free triple bill and X-Ray Vinyl release party with The Preservation on the Club Congress patio!

Tom Russell in Studio 2A Friday on The Home Stretch


Tune in at 3:30pm for a Studio 2A performance and interview with Tom Russell this Friday Feb. 15th.
Tom will be performing at the Javarita Coffeehouse Friday in Sahuarita and at Cafe Roka in Bisbee on Saturday.
Southwestern songwriter extraordinaire, Tom Russell sat down with KXCI's Gregory Sweet Friday afternoon for a few songs and conversation on The Home Stretch.

This interview will air after 3:30pm's Local Pick of the Week from Mellow Bellow, who happen to be playing a KXCI Presents! show Monday night with Night Beds who will be live in Studio 2A as well on Feb. 18th.

Rialto Theatre Gala with Grupo Fantasma Saturday Feb 9th



KXCI is proud to help sponsor the fundraising Gala of one of our sister non-profits and collaboration partners, The Rialto Theatre Foundation.
Saturday Grupo Fantasma plays the main show and Brownout plays the after party. This is like an encore of the amazing performances from our 2012 Festival En El Barrio where Grupo Fantasma played the main stage and Brownout played the after party.
Sure to be a sweet night of Latin music, soul, funk, rock, food, drink,  and art and gift auctions for a great cause.

They're joined by friends, collaborators and fellow Portlanders Alialujah Choir, an indie folk trio featuring members of Weinland, Norfolk & Western and M. Ward.

Daniel Johnston Saturday, Feb. 2nd at Club Congress, KXCI Presents!



Daniel Johnston makes a rare touring appearance at Club Congress this Saturday, February 2nd in a KXCI Presents! show.
Austin’s outsider songwriter Daniel Johnston gained a long cult following which led to the documentary film The Devil and Daniel Johnston. He has been championed by the likes of Tom Waits and Beck who covered his songs. Reubens Accomplice opens this early show at 7pm.
